Students celebrate quadruple win at Scottish Student Journalism Awards

Glasgow Clyde College Students With Their SSJA Awards

Glasgow Clyde College students are celebrating after winning four awards at this year’s Scottish Student Journalism Awards (SSJAs).

HND Practical Journalism students Stephen McCabe, John Glover, Amy Maguire all scooped awards last night, whilst the student publication, Clyde Outside magazine took home the Publication of the Year Award.

Stephen McCabe, winner of the Calum Macdonald Memorial award for his Lennon’s Day charity appeal said:
“I didn’t put myself forward for this award, so it is a really unexpected win. It was a personal subject for me and I wanted to help my friend’s family through a difficult time. I'm really happy to win this award.”

Amy Maguire, winner of NUJ Column of the Year, for her moving first person piece about life with her younger brother, who was diagnosed with autism as a young child, said:
“I’m a little bit in shock that I won, it hasn’t quite sunk in yet.”

Richard Mason, picking up the award for Publication of the Year for the College’s Clyde Outside magazine said:
“Creating the magazine was a lot of hard work, the team put in so much effort, and winning this award has made it all worthwhile.”

John Glover won Scoop of the Year for his interview with author Irvine Welsh.

The awards recognise the journalistic talent of students studying at college and university throughout Scotland, and provides students with the opportunity to see their work honoured by media industry professionals.

The event is organised by the College’s 2nd Year HND Media and Communications students as part of their graded-unit project. The students used their networking skills and media contacts to secure the judging panel for this year’s ceremony which is made up of some of the most respected figures from the world of print and broadcast media in Scotland, including sports writer and broadcaster Graham Spiers, STV video journalist and presenter Louise Scott and political correspondent for The Herald and BBC, Lucy Adams.

The event was hosted by radio presenter and sports writer Cat Harvey at Glasgow’s Corinthian Club on Thursday 25th May.
