New Year, New Career

Duncan McDougall 1

By Duncan McDougall, Assistant Principal: International and Business Development

In 2021, we witnessed the ‘Great Resignation’ - a phenomenon where many employees quit their jobs as a result of various pressures of the pandemic. So, for many, the arrival of a new calendar year promises a fresh start and a chance to pursue a new career path.

Instead of cutting something out in the New Year, why not embark on taking up a new skill that could lead you towards an exciting new job?

UK employment vacancies are currently at a record high, and the country is trying to bridge the skills gap across a number of sectors, so it’s the perfect time to pursue a new career.

At Glasgow Clyde College we pride ourselves on our UpSkill programme, which includes a wide range of part-time and full-time learning courses covering everything from business to fashion and beauty, to health and social care, sport, engineering and many more.

Taking one of our short courses in your spare time can really change your life; whether you want to learn a new skill, improve your job prospects, or gain a qualification, we have something to suit all interests and ages.

Always thought you were above average at nail art? The college’s Artistic Gel Polishing course is the perfect place to polish up your nail art skills or add to your treatment list if you are already employed in a salon.

Or for anyone keen to craft a trade, there are classes in gas or electrical engineering or plumbing.

A City & Guilds Award in Education and Training (Level 3) is perfect if you have no previous teaching or training qualifications but want to obtain a nationally recognised qualification that would allow you to pass on your vocational skills to others.

The Counselling Theory for Practice course is the ideal pathway for those interested in a counselling role, aiming to progress to HNC Counselling or COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills.

Even though some of the courses will still be taking place online, the UpSkill programme will be restarting face-to-face teaching as the pandemic begins to allow us to return to campus-based activities.

Furthermore, many of the courses are eligible for Skills Development Scotland Funding, offering up to £200 towards the cost of tuition fees. It’s never too late to make a new year’s resolution and Glasgow Clyde College can help you if building your CV is one of your goals for 2022.
