This one-day workshop exploring the concept of upcycling, giving hands-on experience working with garments or garment parts to create something new. We will explore different approaches to reuse and repurposing garments. Techniques will explore deconstructing and reconstructing, patchworking, stitch techniques and fabric manipulation to create a product. All levels of experience are welcome. You will leave with a series of samples and a product you can continue to develop after completing the workshop.

What will I learn?

  • An introduction into issues of textile waste within the fashion industry.
  • Explore upcycling approaches and designers that focus on upcycling in their design practice.
  • Practical approaches to upcycling: patchwork, fabric manipulation, garment disassembly and re-assembly.
  • Create stitch and fabric samples using deadstock fabrics.
  • Understanding how to design using learned techniques.

Entry requirements (minimum)

This course is open to all, but a keen interest in fashion is beneficial.

This course is ideal if you are hoping to progress to a fashion or textiles course at College or University or if you have an interest in upcycling fashion garments.
