The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course is ideal if you have no experience teaching English as a foreign language or if you are an experienced teacher looking to gain a recognised qualification with a teaching element.
What will I learn?
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course provides you with the skills and knowledge to plan and deliver effective English language lessons as a teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and continue your professional development after the course.
This is a very intensive course with a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills, through observation and practice with language students, as well as input and written assignments.
Modules covered:
- Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- Language analysis and awareness
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
Certification obtained upon successful completion of the course: The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA).
Entry requirements (minimum)
- The application is a two-part process, composed of a pre-interview written task and an interview, which can be online if required
- No previous teaching experience is required
- Candidates must have a level of education that would allow them to enter university (e.g. Four SQA Highers at Grade C or above.
While it is not necessary to be a native speaker to take the CELTA course, you will need a very high standard of English language skills, equivalent to one of the following:
- a minimum of IELTS 7.5 in all skills
- Cambridge Assessment English C1 (Grade A or B) or C2+
- CEFR high C1 or above.

CELTA is awarded and administered by Cambridge English, which is part of Cambridge University Press and Assessment, a department of the University of Cambridge.
The CELTA qualification is currently accredited in the UK by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) at Level 5 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and is a 30-credit qualification.
Jobs and further study
CELTA is the most widely recognised English teaching qualification in the world and the minimum requirement most often requested by employers. Successful completion of the course offers access to employment and subsequent further training all over the world.
After CELTA and teaching for two years full-time (or the part-time equivalent), you can take the Trinity Diploma in TESOL or the Cambridge DELTA qualifications.

Please note that while payment for the course secures a conditional place on the course, the conditions of passing skills tests and a successful interview are required to join the course. The interview process will involve language skills evaluation.
