National 5 Computing Science is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts which form the foundation of computing science and explores the role and impact of computing technologies. You'll also develop a range of skills that will be invaluable for your future studies and a potential career in computing science.

What will I learn?

During National 5 Computer Science you'll learn:

Software design and development

You'll develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in software design and development, through a range of practical and investigative tasks using appropriate software development environments. 

Computer systems

You'll develop an understanding of how data and instructions are stored in binary form and basic computer architecture, and gain an awareness of the environmental impact of the energy use of computing systems and security precautions that can be taken to protect computer systems.

Database design and development 

You'll develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in database design and development, through a range of practical and investigative tasks.

Web design and development

You'll  develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in web design and development, through a range of practical and investigative tasks.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • You should have passes in National 4 Maths and National 4 English, plus one other subject, preferably in a science-based subject.
  • No prior computing or programming knowledge is required but if you have any experience, for example of using Python or C, or using HTML/CC for web design this would be an advantage.

Jobs and further study

If you successfully complete this course you could progress to Higher Computing Science or, with passes in other National 5 courses, to computing courses at Level 6.
