LOOKING TO BECOME A COMMERCIAL GAS ENGINEER?
This course is designed for those wishing to enter the gas industry. It is ideal for employers/companies looking to upskill operatives with relevant experience or candidates with the support of a fully qualified Gas Safe registered mentor.
On successful completion, candidates will receive a BPEC Gas Foundation certificate. This enables candidates to undertake ACS assessments and apply to work under the Gas Safe Register.
Glasgow Clyde College is a fully accredited BPEC Assessment Centre.

What will I learn?
The BPEC Non-Domestic Gas Foundation programme consists of classes at college and on-the-job training. To enrol, you must have a mentor, who is fully Core Gas Safety registered and has the relevant non-domestic qualifications to assist with the completion of your portfolio. You will be required to document each appliance you work on.
Please note the College cannot provide you with a mentor or employer. A training plan is required to be set up with your employer/mentor.
Taught over six to eight months, the course covers non-domestic gas supply systems.
You will learn about:
- Gas pipework and fittings (identification, installation methods and techniques)
- Gas safety legislation
- Characteristics of combustion and natural gas
- Standing and operating pressure and gas rates
- Positioning of emergency control valves and emergency procedures
- Tightness testing and purging (IGE/UP/1B Domestic)
- Unsafe situations, use of emergency notice and warning labels
- First fix commercial pipework of pipe diameters above 28mm and up to 150mm with Maximum operating pressure not exceeding 75mbar
- Tightness testing and direct purging of small low pressure commercial installation pipework not exceeding 1m3 in volume (IGE/UP/1A)
- Tightness testing and direct purging of commercial installation pipework exceeding 1m3 in volume and up to 7 bar (IGE/UP/1)
- Commercial heating ventilation requirements
- Commercial heating appliances and equipment
- Checking and setting commercial supply and appliance pressures and meter regulators
- Use of flue gas analysis equipment
- Gas safety devices and controls
- Re-establish gas supplies, purging and re-lighting
- Tightness testing (to requirements of IGE/UP/1B and commercial pipework/appliance connections (IGE/UP/1A)

- HEATING ENGINEER
On successful completion and receipt of the foundation certificate, you are eligible to undertake gas assessments such as COCN1 and appliances.

Entry requirements (minimum)
- A recognised qualification in the mechanical services engineering sector (e.g. plumbing) and industry recognised transferable skills
Applicants without the above and / or new to the gas industry will require a technical interview to establish suitability for the course and if suitable, what intensity of training is required.
