This course will provide an in-depth study of Higher Physics topics, developing the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the exam through a mix of tutor led teaching tutorial sessions, lab work and diagnostic testing.

This course will be largely taught on campus but there will be some classes online.

What will I learn?

We will be covering the following units:

Our dynamic universe

  • Motion: Forces, energy and power
  • Momentum
  • Gravitation, projectiles and satellites
  • Special relativity: The expanding universe

Particles and waves

  • Electric fields
  • Standard mode
  • Nuclear reactions
  • Waves
  • Spectra
  • Refraction of light

Electricity

  • DC and AC circuits, series and parallel
  • Internal resistance
  • Capacitors
  • semiconductors

There will be an assignment which involves supervised experiments and related research that are written up as a report and sent to the SQA for marking. This contributes to the grading in the final exam.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • A or B pass in National 5, Intermediate 2, Standard Grade Credit Level (or equivalent), in Physics or
  • Have studied Maths or similar (i.e. Engineering) at HE level.
