This PDA Developing Professional Practice in health and social care: Maternity support course has been designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare support workers who already work in a maternity support role. This qualification is also suitable for those who have successfully completed the HNC Healthcare Practice and wish to enhance their university application for midwifery.

This award is also suitable for individuals who have an interest in, or would like to work as, a maternity support assistant, childbirth educator or doula.

What will I learn?

This course is partially funded. You will be required to pay a £100 deposit once you have been accepted on the course. Depending on eligibility and previous study, you may be able to apply for SAAS or an Individual Training Account at www.myworldofwork.co.uk

This maternity care assistant course is made up of three units: there is an introductory unit that will introduce you to the communication skills, values and qualities required of the care worker, you will also learn about inter-professional working and the importance of collaboration in the delivery of effective person-centred care.  There are two units which focus on maternal health and well-being and foetal health and well-being.

You will learn about the physical changes that occur during pregnancy and immediately following birth, including the development of the fetus and antenatal screening processes. In addition, the course will look at obstetric emergencies and appropriate assessment and treatment.

You will also investigate the role of the maternity support worker in supporting the woman/person and baby.

Finally, you will learn about hospital and community-based maternity care in relation to supporting maternal and foetal health and well-being.

You will develop the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to deliver effective care under the guidance of the registered practitioner.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • NC Level 6 in a Health or Care related area OR
  • SWAP Access to Nursing OR
  • Two Highers or equivalent, preferably including English
  • A successful interview
  • A detailed personal statement supplied prior to the interview
  • You are also invited without formal qualifications but must have relevant work experience. This will be subject to an entrance exam.
  • Even if you meet the minimum entry requirements, due to the demand for places and the specialist nature of this course, you may not be called for an interview.

This qualification enhances successful candidates' application for a senior health care support worker role within the NHS and care sector.

Following successful completion of the course, you will have a qualification that supports application to Year 1 of degree programmes in nursing and midwifery at a variety of universities.
