The Professional Development Award (PDA) in Addiction Counselling aims to not only give you the knowledge and understanding necessary to support individuals living with addiction but will also consider the practicalities involved with this support.

What will I learn?

This PDA in Addiction Counselling covers the following units:

  • Understanding addictive behaviours
  • Working with addictive behaviours
  • Working with substance misuse.

Once you have successfully completed this course, you will have developed a sound knowledge of:

  • identifying possible addictions
  • explaining theoretical models relating to addictive behaviour
  • describing current treatment options
  • investigating current organisational services for addiction
  • analysing group process in relation to facilitation of an addiction group
  • comparing and contrasting effects of substances that are recognised as leading to addiction
  • analysing the effects of substance misuse of one family member on family functioning.

This course is delivered both online and on campus.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Relevant SCQF Level 6 qualification such as Counselling Theory for Practice: An Introduction (HE1A 46) or Substance Use and Misuse  (HE89 45)
  • Higher Psychology or equivalent
  • Higher English or equivalent
  • Additionally, voluntary or paid work experience within the field of addictions or counselling with an interest in addictions and a desire to work in the addictive behaviours sector in the future would be desirable.
  • Entry to the course is at the discretion of the college, and evidence of suitability for the course may be obtained either at interview and or written assignment.
