Students are high street fashion material

Andi Manderson Fashion Student

Students on the college’s HND Fashion Design and Manufacture course were given the opportunity to enter a competition run in partnership with Militia Clothing London. The students were given a brief from the contemporary menswear brand and asked to each design a range of modern casualwear featuring graphic prints, with the best t-shirt designs to be put into production.

Budding fashion designers Andi Manderson from Renfrew and Crookston’s Adele Carmody emerged as winners of the competition and hope their t-shirt designs hit the high street after winning the opportunity to work with the London-based fashion brand.

Eighteen-year-old former Trinity High School pupil Andi said: “I decided to create an edgy, monochrome collection as I felt like it would fit in with the brand and current menswear trends. I was inspired by the hip-hop music and culture of the late-1980s and early-90s. I’d never actually worked on a menswear collection before the competition but I enjoyed it so much that I’d definitely like to explore the area more.

“I couldn’t believe it when I was announced as one of the winners. Militia Clothing London are going to put one of my t-shirts into production and I can’t wait to work with them. It’ll be great to see my design on their website and I’m hoping that having this on my CV will help me secure an internship or employment in the industry after I finish my college course.”

Ex-Lourdes Secondary School pupil Adele said: “I took inspiration from the club-techno scene and looked at the linear effects of strobe lighting. I’d never done menswear before so designing the collection was quite challenging but I ended up loving it.”

“I think it’s brilliant that they’re going to put one of my designs into production. The fact they chose me as one of the winners has given me a huge confidence boost.”

Janet Hanson, Senior Fashion Design Lecturer at Glasgow Clyde College, said: “We were all really impressed with the diversity of the design development, presentation, graphics and source material used by our students. As this is the first menswear project they’ve worked on, the experience will add an extra dimension to their portfolios. All the students seemed to really enjoy it and we were really impressed with the work completed by Andi, Adele and all their classmates.”
