This Carpentry and Joinery course will develop your practical skills and enable you to demonstrate your ability to complete common tasks within the construction industry. This course will help you gain an insight into the industry and will assist you to make informed choices regarding a career in construction.
The work-based challenge element of the course will give you the opportunity to complete a project with input from an external employer. You will be given a set goals and industry challenges to work towards.
This course will also provide you with the opportunity to develop Meta skills which will are transferable to any workplace. You will be required to work independently and collaboratively with others.

You will be studying a Foundation Apprenticeship in Construction at SCQF Level 5
- Manufacture Joinery Components (F1KX 11)
- Develop Site Joinery Skills (F1L3 11)
- Develop Bench Joinery Skills (F1KN 11)
- Work Based Challenge (J4E3 04)
Course assessment:
Assessment for this course is on-going throughout the year and there is no end of course exam.
Entry requirements
You must have:
- An interest in working in the construction industry
- Have 3 passes at National 4, which should include maths and a technical subject
- Some aptitude for graphical forms of communication, as you will be required to read basic drawings.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 - 16:00
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This means that should you wish to progress onto the next level you will not have to complete a formal application form.

- NPA in Joinery SCQF 5
- NC Built Environment
- Pre apprentice electrician
- Pre apprentice plumbing
The level you might enter would depend on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
Employment Routes / Job Areas
A Modern Apprenticeship in construction such as bricklaying or joinery. You would train on the job, on a building site or workshop, and off the job at college. Apprenticeships usually last for four years
