Are you wanting to work with children and young people and have a keen interest in a career in the following areas: Child Development Officer, Childhood Practice Practitioner, Playworker, or Primary Teaching. If the answer is yes, you have the opportunity to study the theory and practice required to prepare you for further study leading to potential employment. The National Progression Award is designed as a stepping-stone towards support practitioner status at SCQF Level 6 or to further study at Higher National Certificate SCQF Level 7.
When you complete this qualification, you will have the opportunity to choose to add value through the completion of a work placement. You will be given the choice to complete a work placement which on successful completion will provide you with a Foundation Apprenticeship.

Entry requirements
You must have a clear interest in Early Learning and Childcare, Playwork, Education or Social Services. along with:
- Higher English
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.
You will have the opportunity to choose to do a 3-week block placement in June and potentially commit to additional time as required (this will be discussed with your school to best fit with your timetable) in order to achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship. This opportunity will be discussed with you at the beginning of the course.
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This will also be dependent on your attendance and commitment to this course. You could progress on to the following full-time programmes:
- HNC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 7)
- HNC Additional Support Needs (SCQF Level 7
The entry point (level you would study) would be dependent on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
Employment Routes / Job Areas
You may be able to progress to a Nursery Manager post once you have achieved a degree or equivalent in Childhood Practice
A Modern Apprenticeship in Childcare or Early Years Care and Education, leading to a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Levels 2 to 4 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development
