This course is designed as an introduction to early learning and childcare and will help you to begin to understand some of the demands and responsibilities of working in this sector. The Early Learning and Childcare course offers opportunities for you to acquire critical generic employability skills through a variety of practical experiences that are linked to this particular vocational area, early learning, childcare and play work.
Please note there is no placement attached to this course.

Mandatory Units:
- Child Development
- Play in Early Learning and Childcare
- Working in Early Learning and Childcare
Candidates also study one optional Unit which will be chosen by the college:
- Care of Children
- Maintenance of a Safe Environment
- Contemporary Families
Entry requirements
You must have a clear interest in the subject area along with:
- Nat 4 Maths and/or English
Target Year Group: S5 or S6.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.
Progression Pathways
After successful completion of this course, you will be offered the opportunity of internal progression. This will depend on your attendance and commitment to this course. You would potentially gain a place on:
- National Certificate (NC) or National Qualification (NQ) course in Early Education and Childcare
You might also go on to do:
- Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Early Education and Childcare.
The entry point (level you would study) would be dependent on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
