This introductory course will introduce you to the Midwifery and Children’s Nursing profession and allow you to examine a career in nursing or health care. The course consists of practical sessions within the college skills lab, carrying out basic healthcare skills such as bathing babies and undertaking clinical observations. You will also explore how to care for children and the responsibilities and values of a health care professional will be addressed.

You will examine risks to health care staff and how to improve health & wellbeing. We will introduce you to speakers from the health care sector and the course tutors will all be from a professional healthcare background and will share their own experiences and advice on career options.

Introduction to Midwifery and Children’s Nursing SCQF Level 4 and 5:


Units you will study are:

  • Introduction to Midwifery and Children’s Nursing (College Certificate)
  • Care of Children (SQA Unit)
  • Basic Healthcare Needs (SQA Unit)
  • Prevention of Infection
  • Care Values and Principles

Please note that this course is a suite of SQA units at SCQF level 4 and 5 as well as a College Certificate. It is not a full Group Award.

Entry requirements

You must have a clear interest in the subject area and:

  • Two passes at National 5, one of which must be English

Target Year Group: S5 and S6

Attendance Pattern

You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 13:30 - 16:00

Progression Pathways

On successful completion of the course along with good attendance and commitment, you will be given the opportunity of internal progression on to one of the following courses:

  • NC Level 6 Health Care (pre-Nursing course with clinical placement)
  • HNC Healthcare Practice (equivalent to First Year Nursing) in addition to completing the level 6 qualification you will need TWO Highers for access to this HNC course, one Higher should be English
