Express your creativity in Hairdressing by completing this National Progression Award. Part of learning skills in the field of Hairdressing is appreciating the health and safety implications for any treatments as well as understanding the effects of treatments. This is an exciting, practical course which will give you an ideal launchpad for a career in this industry.
Whilst this class is practical in nature, you must also complete some written work in the form of a workbook, as well as a portfolio and short tests. Emphasis is placed upon employability skills and aptitude of the industry to prepare you for the workplace and further study. You will be expected to complete some home study to consolidate your learning.

National Progression Award in Cosmetology SCQF Level 4.
Units you will study are:
- Working with Customers and Colleagues
- Cosmetology: Product Awareness
- Cosmetology: Career Options and Choices
- Cosmetology: Prepare and Assist in a Workplace Environment
- Cosmetology: Hairdressing - Practical Skills
- Cosmetology: Health and Safety
You will also have the opportunity to learn:
- Long Hair Styling
- IT Skills
Entry requirements
You must have:
- have National 4 Maths and/or English
- a keen interest in the hair industry, be able to work as part of a team and have a caring approach.
You will be required to work on each other, so you must be prepared to apply and model shampoo techniques, and other treatments.
Target Year Group: S5 or S6
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 13:30 - 16:00
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of the course along with good attendance and commitment to this course, you will be given the opportunity of internal progression on to one of the following courses:
- National Certificate (NC) or National Qualification (NQ) course in Hairdressing, Barbering, Make- up Artistry, or Beauty Therapy
Depending on other qualifications, you could go on to a
- Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Hairdressing, Beauty or even Make-up Artistry
Employment Routes / Job Areas
You might go on to:
- A Modern Apprenticeship, leading to a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Levels 2 & 3 in Hairdressing, Barbering. Apprenticeships usually last for two years.
•With relevant work experience, you can be employed as a salon stylist, Barber, with further opportunities for career progression, as salon manager or even a salon owner.
