Social Services: Children and Young People Apprenticeships

Are you looking to qualify an employee working within social services: children and young people sector?

Modern and Technical Apprenticeship programmes offer the chance for students to gain a recognised qualification in social services: children and young people.

The training and development of the social services workforce play a critical role in ensuring that the services children and young people receive are high quality, effective and efficient. Qualification development for the sector reflects the needs of employers and regulation and registration by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) ensures that good practice is subsequently well embedded.

Course content

Modern Apprenticeship

SVQ Social Services: Children and Young People at SCQF 7 – This will be assessed in the work place to suit company requirements.

Technical Apprenticeship

SVQ Social Services: Children and Young People at SCQF 9 – This will be assessed in the work place to suit company requirements and is designed for Supervisors/Managers that are employed in a range of services the support children and young people across the daycare of children and social services sector. They are employed to lead and manage services, to support staff and children and young people in a number of settings such as nurseries, out of school care, education services and community settings.

Career Skills

The Technical Apprentice will undertake an additional 15 SCQF credits, for example:

  • Provide leadership in your area of responsibility
  • Develop your knowledge, skills and competence.

Teaching methods and assessment

All our programmes are delivered using a wide range of teaching techniques, including tutorials, access to virtual learning environment and e.portfolio.

All Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) vocational courses are continually assessed by observation of competent workplace practice and written, online and oral assessment. A dedicated SVQ Assessor will be assigned to work with your Modern Apprentices for the duration of their training, this would involve regular visits to the workplace.

Fees and materials

Modern Apprenticeship

The cost of the training will be fully financed by Skills Development Scotland.

Technical Apprenticeship

The cost of the training will be partly financed by Skills Development Scotland, and an additional payment will be required from the employer.

Outcome

Modern Apprenticeship

Completion of the Modern Apprenticeship and certification will qualify workers to be recognised as practitioners in a number of areas within the sector supporting children and young people. Practitioners may be employed in the private sector, local authority, third sector, such as nurseries, education support roles, out of school care, etc. Workers/practitioners are employed in a range of services for children and young people as child development officers, playworkers, support for learning staff, etc. Practitioners may be employed in as residential care, although those who work in residential childcare study for the additional award of HNC in Social Care. Practitioners may be employed to engage with children and young people in community setting’s or their own home, as childminder or foster carers, and may engage with vulnerable children and their families who may present complex needs.

Technical Apprenticeship

Completion of the Technical Apprenticeship and certification will qualify workers to be recognised as lead practitioner/ managers in a number of areas within the social services sector, and will allow for progression to the PDA Childhood Practice: leadership and management at SCQF 9 or the BA in Childhood Practice to gain SSSC registration as a manager of daycare of children services.

Lead practitioner/ managers may be employed to support other staff and children and young people in a number of settings such as day care services and out of school care, education settings, as well as residential care. Additionally, workers may engage with children and young people in community setting’s or their own home as childminder or foster carers. Workers may be employed in the private sector, local authority, third sector or the NHS.

Careers or further study

Successful completion of both these programmes may provide access to higher levels of study. This programme offers recognised SQA qualifications.
